Bike compatibility at a glance
Freehubs, cleats, hookless rims, frames and chains: the short answers, each linked to its sourced guide.
Will my cassette fit my trainer?
The cassette goes on the trainer's freehub body. If the freehub does not match your cassette, nothing else matters.
| Drivetrain | What the trainer needs |
|---|---|
| Shimano 12-speed road | Fits the standard HG body most trainers ship with. You need a 12-speed cassette on it. |
| SRAM AXS road and XPLR (12 and 13-speed) | Needs an XDR freehub body on the trainer. Wahoo, Tacx, Elite and Zwift all list one. Some cheaper SRAM PG cassettes fit a standard body instead. |
| Campagnolo 13-speed (Ekar and other N3W systems) | Wahoo says it is not compatible with KICKR, CORE or MOVE. Elite's Campagnolo body excludes Ekar. Garmin has a Tacx N3W body. |
| Shimano Micro Spline 12-speed (MTB and some GRX) | Wahoo says no body is available. Wahoo lists workarounds. |
- On SRAM, a 10t smallest cog means XDR (Elite).
- If the biggest cog on the trainer is larger than the one on your bike, "you can damage your drivetrain" (Wahoo).
SRAM 13-speed on Elite: Elite's product page says 12-speed, its compatibility PDF says 12/13 for the same part. Check with Elite if you run 13. Garmin doesn't state which cog counts the Tacx XD-R body supports.

Will the Zwift Cog work on my trainer?
The Zwift Cog is a single sprocket that goes on a Shimano Hyperglide freehub body, on direct-drive trainers only.
- Freehub: not compatible with Shimano Micro Spline, SRAM XD/XDR or Campagnolo bodies. If you moved your trainer to an XDR body for SRAM, the Cog needs a Hyperglide body back on.
- Not on Zwift's list: the Tacx FLUX trainers, Wahoo KICKR v5 and older, and Elite's Zumo, Drivo and Drivo II.
- Cog size: a 14-tooth Cog for every compatible trainer, except Elite, which gets an 18-tooth Cog.
- Bike speeds: Zwift, Wahoo and Garmin say 8 to 13-speed. Decathlon and JetBlack say 8 to 12-speed. On 13-speed, check with your trainer brand. Zwift excludes Campagnolo N3W 13-speed chains.
- You don't need the Cog for virtual shifting. Wahoo, Garmin and Elite all say the firmware and a Zwift controller are what enable it.

Can I run this tire on hookless rims?
Only if the tire brand says it is hookless (TSS) compatible. When the tire, the rim and the standard disagree, follow the lowest number. Pressure and rim width both.
Max pressure on hookless
| Nominal tire width | Max |
|---|---|
| 18-24 mm | 5.5 bar |
| 25-29 mm | 5 bar |
| 30-34 mm | 4.5 bar |
| 35-39 mm | 4 bar |
| 40-44 mm | 3.5 bar |
| 45-54 mm | 3 bar |
| 55-64 mm | 2.5 bar |
Schwalbe, in accordance with the ETRTO.
Minimum tire width on hookless
| Internal rim width | Min tire |
|---|---|
| Up to 21 mm | 25 mm |
| 22 to 23 mm | 28 mm |
| 24 mm | 29 mm |
| 25 mm | 29 mm |
Stricter of TOUR's report and ISO Table 7 via Bicycling, not verified against the standard. They differ only at 24 mm (TOUR: 28 mm). Your rim maker's chart is the one to follow.
- A higher max pressure printed on the tire does not override the hookless limit.
- Zipp says its TSS wheel and tire systems "should never be inflated to more than 5 bar (72 psi)."
- A tube does not make a non-approved tire safe on a hookless rim.

How much does my rim change my tire width?
About 0.4 mm for every 1 mm of rim width away from the rim the tire was designed for (the ETRTO rule of thumb, as Vittoria publishes it).
- Bicycle Rolling Resistance measured about 0.425 mm per mm for road tires and 0.3 mm for gravel tires, with height barely changing.
- BRR recommends "a rim width of at least 50% of the specified tire width."
| Internal rim width | ETRTO recommended tire range |
|---|---|
| 21 mm | 29 to 34 mm |
| 23 mm | 35 to 46 mm |
| 25 mm | 47 to 57 mm |
ETRTO 2020, as reprinted by BikeRadar. A fit recommendation, not a safety rule. On hookless rims, the minimums above apply.

Will a wider tire fit my frame?
Shop with the brand's stated max tire width. Frame clearance is not a tire size: Cervélo's Áspero Disc MK1 lists a 43 mm max tire but 53 mm of frame clearance.
| Frame | 1x | 2x |
|---|---|---|
| Canyon Grail (CF) | 57 mm | Not stated |
| Giant Revolt (aluminium) | 53 mm | 45 mm |
| Cannondale Topstone Carbon | 52 mm | 45 mm |
As the brands state it. Canyon says the Grail's 57 mm needs a 1x groupset. The Revolt's 53 mm is in the long flip-chip position; the Topstone's 52 mm is a measured width.
- Use the smaller of frame and fork.
- A measured-width figure is stricter than it looks: a tire sold as 50 mm can measure wider on a wide rim.
- Cervélo recommends 4 mm of clearance between tire and frame.

Can my frame run SRAM 13-speed XPLR?
SRAM's 13-speed XPLR rear derailleurs clamp to the frame, so look for a UDH. SRAM: if your bike has a UDH, "your bike is ready for any of SRAM's Full Mount derailleurs."
- Chainstays (Force XPLR AXS): 415 mm and up endorsed with a 47.5 mm chainline. 405 to 415 mm can work with a standard road crankset at a 45 mm chainline. Rear suspension that changes chainstay length is not supported.
- Drivetrain: XPLR 13-speed cassettes and road Flattop chains only. The 13-speed RED XPLR XG-1391 cassette is listed as compatible with the XDR driver body.
- UDH stated by the brand: Specialized Crux 5 and Diverge 4 (FACT 9r carbon), Cannondale Topstone Carbon, Trek Checkpoint SL Gen 3, Orbea Terra and Terra Race. A frame not listed may still have one.
- No "UDH" mark on the hanger bolt does not prove there is no UDH. Some brands make their own UDH hangers.

Will my cleats fit these pedals?
SPD is the two-bolt system. SPD-SL and SPD-SLR are both three-bolt, and they are not interchangeable.
| Cleat | SPD pedal | SPD-SL pedal | SPD-SLR pedal |
|---|---|---|---|
| SPD2-bolt, SM-SH51 | Yes | No | No |
| SPD-SL3-bolt, SM-SH11 | No | Yes | No |
| SPD-SLR3-bolt, CL-SL110 | No | Not supported | Yes |
SPD-SLR cleats in SPD-SL pedals: Shimano says "not compatible with SPD-SL pedals". Cycling Weekly reports they fit unofficially, but Shimano does not recommend it. SPD-SL cleats in SPD-SLR pedals: no, per BikeRadar and Bicycling.
- SPD-SLR pedals: Dura-Ace PD-R9300 and Ultegra PD-R8200. Previous Dura-Ace and Ultegra and current 105 are SPD-SL.
- Shoes: SPD-SLR cleats go on existing three-bolt shoes, including non-Shimano ones, but fore-aft adjustment moves into the shoe. The grey CL-SL130 gives traditional fore-aft range, with no stack reduction (Bicycling, Bikerumor).

Which power meter pedals fit my cleats?
No brand lists an SPD-SLR power meter pedal yet (checked 28 September 2026).
| Cleat system | Power meter pedals |
|---|---|
| SPD (2-bolt) | Favero Assioma PRO MX, Garmin Rally XC110 / XC210, Look X-Track Power, SRM X-Power |
| SPD-SL | Favero Assioma PRO RS, Garmin Rally RS110 / RS210, Magene P715 S, SRM X-Power Road |
| SPD-SLR | None listed |
| Look Keo, Speedplay | Look Keo Blade Power, Wahoo SPEEDPLAY POWER |
- On SPD-SLR pedals: put power somewhere else. A crank arm, spindle or spider meter doesn't care what you clip into.
- Road and gravel on one sensor: Favero and Garmin both sell road and SPD bodies for the same spindle.

How long should my chain be?
Check on the bike: chain on the largest ring and largest cog, then add what your drivetrain maker says.
