Internal width is on the rim decal or in the wheel's specs (622 x 25 = 25 mm). Hooked includes tubeless-ready hooked (TC) rims; hookless is TSS. Tire width is the number on the sidewall.

25mmhookless rim · 30 mm tire

A 30 mm tire on a 25 mm hookless rim: listed by 4 of 5 sources, mixed in 1.

Sources differ on the narrowest tire: 27 mm (ENVE) to 30 mm (DT Swiss).

Hookless maximum for a 30 mm tire: 4.5 bar (ETRTO, as Schwalbe publishes it). Lower if the rim or tire says so.

  • ENVE lists ≥ 27 mm for its 25 mm SES rims. ENVE's own Hookless Rim Technology 101 says “ISO/ETRTO recommends a 29c minimum tire size with 25mm internal rim width” and that its 27c and 29c tires “have been designed and tested for this rim width.” ENVE, Hookless Rim Technology 101
  • Zipp: “When you place most 700x28mm tires on a 25mm internal rim (like a 303 Firecrest or a 353 NSW), the tire will measure greater than 30mm, exceeding the +/- 2mm ISO standard.” Zipp also says it has “partnered with select tire manufactures to validate 28mm tires for use on 303 Firecrest and 353 NSW wheels.” Zipp, Why did the rim and tire recommendations change for hookless wheels?
  • DT Swiss's hookless chart starts at 30 mm tires, so it lists nothing narrower for any rim.

A magazine's report of the ETRTO guidance. We have not seen the ETRTO text itself.

“Up to 21 mm inner dimension: min. 25 mm tyre width. If the rim measures 22-24 mm, the tyre should be at least 28 mm wide. If the rim measures 25 mm inside, the tyre should have a nominal width of at least 29 mm.”

Sources and notes

Each source's own chart, quoted. Not our advice, not merged, and not tested by us. Where they differ, both are shown.

Ranges are each source's, read from their own pages and charts on 17 Oct 2026. The ETRTO table rows are tire-width bands and its columns are rim widths; a half-millimetre rim shows both neighbouring columns. Always follow the rim's and the tire's own limits, and the lower one where they differ. Left out: Hunt: Its help centre publishes measured fitted widths per wheelset and tyre (Fitted Tyre Width Guide), not a tire range by internal rim width. Read 17 Oct. Zipp (as a range): Zipp says minimum width is in its Hookless Tire Compatibility Chart and “is based on the wheel model and tire brand”, so there is no range by internal width. Its 25 mm statement is shown as a note. ISO Table 7 (Bicycling): A magazine's image of the ISO table. The same ETRTO 2024 table is published directly by Schwalbe and Continental, so we use theirs. Its minimums match theirs. ETRTO 2020 pairings (BikeRadar): An older table seen only as a magazine reprint (21 mm: 29 to 34 mm). Superseded by the 2024 table as the tire makers publish it. Mavic: Its ETRTO/ISO chart PDF sets a maximum pressure in each tire/rim cell. Not added this run; it needs a separate careful read. ENVE mountain wheels: Tire ranges given in inches for MTB rims (25 to 85 mm). Out of scope for a road and gravel tool.
