Hookless-compatible gravel tires: what each brand approves
Which gravel tires each tire and rim brand approves for hookless rims, at what pressure, with conflicts flagged.
At a glance
Who it's for: gravel riders on hookless (TSS) wheels who need a tire the tire maker and the rim maker both allow, at a pressure both allow.
Which gravel tires each tire and rim brand approves for hookless rims, at what pressure, with every conflict flagged. Checked 12 October 2026, on US pages where they exist.
The short version
- Use a tire the tire brand calls hookless or TSS compatible. Zipp: "Do not use tires that are not TSS-approved." (Zipp)
- Hookless pressure limits fall as tires get wider: 3.5 bar (51 psi) at 40 to 44 mm and 3 bar (44 psi) at 45 to 54 mm (Schwalbe, citing ETRTO).
- When tire, rim and standard differ, follow the lowest figure, for pressure and for rim width. (Continental)
- Maxxis, Specialized and WTB pages we checked have no hookless statement.
- Some wheels need more than a TSS label: Zipp's 303 XPLR S allows only listed tires from 40 to 57 mm.
Hookless pressure limits at gravel widths
Schwalbe publishes these maximums for hookless rims "in accordance with the ETRTO". (Schwalbe)
| Nominal tire width | Max pressure on hookless |
|---|---|
| 30-34 mm | 4.5 bar (65 psi) |
| 35-39 mm | 4 bar (58 psi) |
| 40-44 mm | 3.5 bar (51 psi) |
| 45-54 mm | 3 bar (44 psi) |
| 55-64 mm | 2.5 bar (36 psi) |
Psi is our conversion, rounded.
A tire's printed maximum can exceed its hookless limit: Schwalbe's US page lists the G-One R Pro 40-622 at 65 PSI / 4.5 bar (Schwalbe US), while its hookless table caps 40 mm at 3.5 bar.
Heat adds pressure: "With every 10°C | 18°F rise in temperature, the inflation pressure increases by roughly 0.17 bar | 2.5 PSI! If the actual inflation pressure exceeds the maximum (hookless) pressure, safe usage of the tyre cannot be ensured!" (Continental) Our tire pressure calculator caps hookless setups at the width limits above.
Tire brands that state hookless approval
Continental
Every size below has the hookless-compatible mark on Continental's US product pages. No price shown. (Continental US)
| Tire | Sizes | Hookless max (product page) | Knowledge page table | Rim width |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Terra Speed ProTection | 35-584, 35-622 | 4.0 bar / 58 psi | 5.0 / 73 | 21 mm rec. |
| 40-584, 40-622 | 3.5 / 51 | 5.0 / 73 | 23 mm rec. | |
| 45-622 | 3.0 / 44 | 4.5 / 65 | 25 mm rec. | |
| Terra Trail ProTection | 40-584, 40-622 | 3.5 / 51 | 5.0 / 73 | 23 mm rec. |
| Terra Trail ShieldWall | 35-622 / 40-622 | 4.0 / 58, 3.5 / 51 | 5.0 / 73 | 21 / 23 mm rec. |
| 45-622, 47-584 | 3.0 / 44 | 4.5 / 65 | 25 mm rec. | |
| Terra Hardpack | 50-584, 50-622 | 3.0 / 44 | 4.5 / 65 | 25 mm rec. |
| Terra Adventure | 45-622, 50-622 | 3.0 / 44 | 3.0 / 44 | 17-27 / 17-30 mm permitted |
| 55-622 | 2.5 / 36 | 2.5 / 36 | 17-30 mm permitted | |
| Terra Competition | 35 / 40 / 45-622 | 4.0 / 58, 3.5 / 51, 3.0 / 44 | not listed | 17-27 mm permitted |
"Rec.": recommended inner rim width, from Continental's knowledge page. "Permitted": the product page's range.
Conflict: Continental's knowledge page lists 5.0 bar (73 psi) hookless for Terra Speed and Trail at 35 and 40 mm and 4.5 bar (65 psi) at 45 mm and Hardpack. The US product pages give those as the hooked figures and list 4.0 / 3.5 / 3.0 bar for hookless, which matches the ETRTO table. Use the product page figure, the lower one, and check the packaging: "The maximum inflation pressure for hookless and hooked applications as well as the maximum inner rim width can be found on the tire packaging and may differ between hooked and hookless applications."
Pirelli
Pirelli's US pages show no price ("Find your dealer").
| Tire | Sizes | What Pirelli says |
|---|---|---|
| Cinturato Gravel H | 35/40/45/50-622, 45/50-584 | "Compatible with hookless rims within the latest standards" |
| Cinturato Gravel M | 35/40/45/50-622, 45/50-584 | "Fully hookless rim compatible under the latest standards" |
| Cinturato Gravel S | 40/45/50-622, 50-584 | "The Cinturato™ Gravel S is compatible with hookless rims according to ETRTO 5bar/73psi max pressure limit" |
Conflict: Gravel S cites 5 bar; the ETRTO table (Schwalbe) sets 3.5 bar at 40 to 44 mm and 3 bar at 45 to 54 mm. Follow the width-based figure.
Vittoria
Vittoria's US store marks hookless approval per size, with no hookless pressure; it points to the ETRTO table for rim widths. (Vittoria US, e.g. Terreno PRO T30)
| Tire | Price | Hookless-approved sizes (700c unless stated) |
|---|---|---|
| Terreno PRO T10, T30, T50, T60 (race) | $112.99 | 35, 40, 45 |
| Terreno T10 Hardpack, T30 Fine Loose (endurance) | $81.99 | 37, 40, 45, 50, 55; 650x47b |
| Terreno T50 Mixed | $81.99 | 40, 45, 50, 55 |
| Terreno T60 Mixed, T90 Mud | $81.99 | 40, 45 |
| Terreno T70 Coarse Loose | $81.99 | 37, 40, 45, 50, 55 |
| Terreno T80 Coarse Loose | $81.99 | 37, 40, 45, 50 |
Successors: Vittoria's old Terreno Dry page opens the T30, Terreno Mix the T80, Terreno Wet the T90.
Schwalbe
"The Schwalbe TLR/TLE models (from model year 2020) are designed to meet these special requirements, especially in the bead core area, and are therefore generally compatible." Schwalbe adds that only TLE/TLR tires may go on hookless rims, that "The compatible (tubeless) tires and tire widths specified by the wheel/rim manufacturer must be taken into account", and that this applies to gravel too. (Schwalbe)
US pages for the G-One RS Pro, R Pro, RX Pro and Overland Pro show US$91.00 in every size and no hookless line. (Schwalbe US)
Hutchinson
"Hutchinson tyres dedicated to gravel and mountain bike ARE compatible with both hooked and hookless rims, within the strict limits of the maximum indicated pressures." And: "If different maximum pressures are specified on the tyre and the rim, it is imperative not to exceed the lower of the two." (Hutchinson)
Conflict: the Touareg page has a hookless tag but also lists tube-type wire-bead versions. The statement makes no tubeless exception; Schwalbe, Giant and CADEX tie hookless to tubeless tires. No price shown.
Panaracer
GravelKing SK, $64.99 on Panaracer USA: "TLR and Hookless Compatible in widths 700 x 30C and wider and all 26", 650B/27.5" and 29” versions." The same list says "Tubeless Compatible up to 60 PSI on most models*", and the asterisk says 700x26C and 700x28C need a tube. (Panaracer USA)
Conflict: 60 psi exceeds the ETRTO hookless limit at 35 mm and wider (58 psi at 35 to 39 mm). The lower figure applies.
Rene Herse
"Rene Herse tires can be used on hookless rims if the rims are of high quality and meet ETRTO / ISO standards." On Enve and Zipp: "These rims are fine to use with all Rene Herse tires." The same page says "We also have tested and approved select Rene Herse tires for ZIPP 303 XPLR rims." (Rene Herse)
A 2020 Rene Herse Journal post: "For tubeless installations, you need tubeless-compatible tires (marked 'TC'). And don't exceed the maximum of 60 psi (4.1 bar) that we recommend for tubeless tires." (Rene Herse Journal)
Conflicts: 60 psi is above the ETRTO hookless limit at 35 mm and wider. "All Rene Herse tires" on Zipp clashes with Zipp's 303 XPLR S list, which names three 44 mm Endurance tires (Corkscrew, Manastash, Snoqualmie Pass). Prices not checked.
No hookless statement found on the brand's own pages
- Maxxis. The 2026 US catalog never mentions hookless, TSS or straight-side rims, and lists Rambler 700x40 and 45 for 17 to 27 mm inner rims (Maxxis catalog PDF). Conflict: Zipp lists Rambler, Ravager and Reaver 40 and 45 and Receptor 40 as dual-tested on the 32 mm 303 XPLR S.
- Specialized. No hookless statement on the Pathfinder TLR page, and no Specialized tire on Zipp's gravel lists.
- WTB. No hookless statement on the Byway page or WTB's FAQ. Zipp lists WTB Raddler, Resolute, Riddler, Venture and Vulpine on the 303 XPLR S.
What the rim brands require
Zipp. "Any TSS-compatible tire as denoted on the tire sidewall or packaging is compatible with Zipp TSS wheels." "TSS-compatible gravel tires are safe to use on Zipp TSS rims within the ISO max system pressure ratings for a given tire size." The 303 XPLR S (32 mm inner) is stricter. ISO recommends 58 to 83 mm tires for that rim, and for 40 to 57 mm: "Within this size range, riders should only use approved tires shown on our compatibility list, which have all undergone testing and review - both by Zipp and the tire manufacturer." It includes Schwalbe G-One, Hutchinson, Vittoria Terreno PRO 45, Panaracer GravelKing X1, Teravail, Tufo and WTB tires, but no Continental or Pirelli. (Zipp)
ENVE. For G Series and Foundation AG wheels, the tire must be TSS hookless compatible and pressure must never exceed the rim's rating; when tire and rim differ, the lower wins. Minimum tires: G23 28 mm, G27 42 mm, AG25 36 mm, AG28 45 mm. Conflict: ENVE gives the AG28 with a 45 mm tire as "40 psi/3.10 bar" in one place and "45 psi/3.10 bar" in another. 3.10 bar is about 45 psi. (ENVE)
Giant and CADEX. Giant: a tire rated 72.5 psi (5 bar) or lower that its brand calls tubeless and hookless compatible can be used on Giant hookless WheelSystems without appearing on Giant's chart. Tubes only with tires that passed Giant's test. (Giant) CADEX: "Every hookless compatible tire clearly indicates a maximum (MAX) pressure of 72.5 psi (5 bar). This is a safety limit that should never be exceeded." (CADEX) CADEX adds that maximum pressure is not the recommended pressure. Conflict: many gravel tires show lower hookless maximums, such as 3.0 bar / 44 psi on Continental's Terra Adventure 45.
Hunt. The 40 Carbon Gravel Race (25 mm inner) is rated for 29 to 60 mm tires. "Only use tires suitable for hookless (TSS) rims. If unsure, please contact the tire manufacturer." (Hunt)
How to check your own setup
- Find the hookless or TSS mark on the tire, packaging or size table.
- Check your rim brand's list and minimum tire width.
- Use the lowest maximum of tire, rim and ETRTO table, and the narrowest rim range.
- Check frame clearance.
